At JSON Editor Online, we take your privacy seriously. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data when you use our service. The short version: we don't collect, store, or transmit your data. Everything happens in your browser.

What Data We Collect

Personal Data: Minimal & Anonymous

We do not collect any personally identifiable information (PII) such as:

• Names, email addresses, or phone numbers
• User accounts or login credentials (no signup required)
• Payment information (because our service is completely free)
• Precise location data

We collect minimal, anonymized analytics data (see "Privacy-Focused Analytics" section below) to understand how our service is used and improve it.

JSON Data: Not Stored

All JSON editing, validation, and conversion happens 100% client-side in your browser using JavaScript. Your JSON data:

• Never uploaded to our servers or any third-party service
• Never transmitted over the internet
• Never stored in our databases
• Never shared with anyone

This makes JSON Editor Online perfect for working with sensitive, confidential, or proprietary data.

Browser Storage (localStorage)

We use your browser's localStorage to enhance your experience:

• Auto-save: Your JSON content is automatically saved in your browser so you don't lose work if you refresh the page
• Theme preference: Your dark/light mode choice is remembered
• Editor settings: Your preferences (indentation, font size) are saved locally

This data is stored only on your device and is never transmitted to our servers. You can clear this data at any time through your browser settings.

Privacy-Focused Analytics (Umami)

We use Umami Analytics, a privacy-focused, self-hosted analytics platform, to understand how our service is used and identify areas for improvement.

What Umami Collects

Umami collects only anonymous, aggregated data:

• Page views: Which pages you visit (e.g., homepage, blog posts)
• Referrer: Where you came from (e.g., Google, direct link)
• Browser type: e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Safari
• Operating system: e.g., Windows, macOS, Linux
• Device type: Desktop, mobile, or tablet
• Country: Approximate location based on anonymized IP (country-level only)

What Umami Does NOT Collect

• No cookies: Umami does not use cookies or persistent identifiers
• No IP addresses: IP addresses are anonymized and not stored
• No personal data: No names, emails, or user accounts
• No cross-site tracking: Data stays on our domain only
• No fingerprinting: No device fingerprinting or tracking
• No JSON data: Your actual JSON content is never collected or seen

Self-Hosted & GDPR Compliant

Unlike Google Analytics or other third-party services:

• Umami is hosted on our own infrastructure (not shared with third parties)
• All analytics data stays on our servers
• GDPR, CCPA, and PECR compliant by design
• No data is sold or shared with advertisers
• Open source and transparent (umami.is)

Cookies

We do not use cookies for tracking, analytics, or advertising. Umami Analytics operates without cookies, and the only browser storage we use is localStorage as described above for auto-save functionality.

Third-Party Services

Content Delivery Networks (CDNs)

We use CDNs to deliver JavaScript libraries and fonts faster:

• Google Fonts: For typography (fonts.googleapis.com, fonts.gstatic.com)
• jsDelivr CDN: For Monaco Editor and other libraries (cdn.jsdelivr.net)

These services may collect basic access logs (e.g., IP addresses, user agents) as part of normal CDN operations. We do not control their data collection practices. Refer to their privacy policies:

Hosting

Our website is hosted on Cloudflare Pages, which may collect basic server logs (IP addresses, timestamps, requested URLs) for security and performance monitoring. We do not have access to or use this data for tracking purposes.

No Third-Party Tracking

We do not use any third-party tracking services:

• No Google Analytics or third-party analytics services
• No tracking pixels or beacons
• No social media trackers
• No advertising networks or ad trackers
• No behavioral tracking or retargeting tools

Our self-hosted Umami analytics (described above) is the only analytics tool we use, and it respects your privacy.

Data Security

Since we don't collect or store your data, there's no data for us to secure. However:

• Our website is served over HTTPS for encrypted connections
• All processing happens in your browser's secure JavaScript sandbox
• We cannot access data stored in your browser's localStorage

Your Rights

Since we don't collect personal data, there's no data for you to request, modify, or delete from our servers. However:

• Clear localStorage: You can clear browser data at any time through your browser settings
• Opt-out of CDNs: If you don't want to load fonts/libraries from CDNs, you can use browser extensions to block those domains

Children's Privacy

JSON Editor Online does not collect any data from users of any age. Our service can be safely used by children under parental supervision for educational purposes.

International Users (GDPR Compliance)

This service is available globally. Since we don't collect or process personal data, GDPR, CCPA, and other privacy regulations do not apply to our data practices. Your JSON data never leaves your device, regardless of your location.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Significant changes will be highlighted at the top of the page.
